Finally Got the Answers – Dog Ancestry

Dog ancestry? What does this mean?

So by this picture, you can see that Molly and Jack look very different despite being Jack Russells.

We knew Molly was potentially a mix breed but we started to think the same about Jack too.

We’ve debated for years what they could possibly be made up from. Christmas 2015 we were going to get them ancestory kits as presents but we didn’t manage to get round to it but last Christmas we did.

Four weeks ago we actually got round to doing the dog ancestry test. Two envelopes containing swab brushes and a self-addressed envelope. Two swabs needed to be done of each of their mouths. Followed the instructions, entered the package details on the website and posted them off.

Last week Stephen got a notification email saying they were ready. EXCITING!!! Finally we were going to get the answers we had wondered about for many years.

What came back was slightly confusing…

Firstly we opened Jack’s results.

Parents: Jack Russells
Grandparents: Jack Russells
Great Grandparents: Jack Russells
Great Great Grandparents: Jack Russells and one Chihuahua

Ok…….

Then Molly’s results:

Parents: Jack Russells
Grandparents: Jack Russells
Great Grandparents: Jack Russells
Great Great Grandparents: Jack Russells and one…wait for it…Old English Sheepdog

*CONFUSED FACE*

I’ve been saying for a while that I reckoned Molly could have Chihuahua in her so we think the results were mixed up. That way would make much more sense.

So from it we’re taking it that Molly has a little Chihuahua in her and Jack has a little Old English Sheepdog in him (makes sense with him always getting covered in paint when I decorate).

An Introduction to Molly

This is my princess Molly. We’ve had her for about 8 years now.

Me and Stephen hadn’t been together too long when we decided to get a puppy.

I already had 3 cats living with my Mum but due to living so close to her i didn’t think it was fair to uproot them as they probably would have found their way back to hers. Plus at the time we were living on a main road and it seemed dangerous.

We looked around and finally decided that a Jack Russell was the size and breed of dog we wanted: short haired, small, plenty of character…

Stephen had a love for them from his Grandad, I was just excited at the prospect of getting a puppy!

We picked up the AdMag from Tesco for a couple of weeks and then we saw it, “Jack Russell puppies for sale – Sheffield”. Gave the number a call and went to visit.

Sadly dad didn’t live with the family but mum did but she’d run off the day before we arrived. Whether this was true or not there was a littler of about 7 tiny bundles of joy running around in a pen in this kitchen. All were very similar colouring and markings. There was even a runt, who by the way was the cutest thing. I couldn’t shake off wanting this bitch who had slightly lighter brown markings.

She had this love-heart shape around her eyes that drew my attention straight away.

That was is. She was the one. Expecting to be going back another day to get her, if we had picked one, we hadn’t got anything at home for her but the people said we could take her there and then as she was old enough. We were so excited, went a got the £70, drove straight back to the house and exchanged.

The little thing was terrified but we made an emergency stop to Tesco and stock-pilled all the puppy things we could find. Took her home and started her life with us and more importantly the cuddles.

An Introduction to Jackie-Boy

We’ve had Jack for about 5 years now.

We re-homed him from a girl I worked with. She claimed that she’d got a puppy but was struggling to cope with him, their other dogs and children.

Once she showed my his photo, I knew we had to have him. He was this tiny Jack Russell puppy with the facial colouring of a Rottweiler.

We’d already got Molly at this point. We’d been to Berlin and back and we felt getting a second dog was a kind option for her to have company when we weren’t around. We didn’t realise at this point how much of a character he’d become.

I convinced Stephen for us to get him. We paid about £50 if I remember right. He was brought to ours with couple of tins of adult dog food (bearing in mind he was only about 4 months old at this point) and some really tatty toys.

I asked if he’d had his jabs. At the age he was, we would have expected him to have had the minimum. She assured us that this was the case and gave us the name of her vets so that we could transfer ownership and get his records. Sadly when we rang the vets, they had no record of him. To be safe we booked him straight in at our vets and got him both his boosters and most importantly got him chipped. He was now fully ours!
